Who was Swami Vivekananda?
Swami Vivekananda (12 January 1863 – 4 July 1902) was an Indian Hindu monk, a major figure in the introduction of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world, and a key figure in the Hindu Renaissance. He was a central figure in the Ramakrishna movement.
He is considered by many to be the most influential Hindu thinker since Shankara. National Youth Day is celebrated on January 12th every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda which is also known as Swami Vivekananda Jayanti.
Swami Vivekananda was born Narendranath Datta in Kolkata, British India. He was educated at the Scottish Church College and the Presidency University in Kolkata. In 1881, he met Ramakrishna, a Hindu mystic and saint, who became his guru. Under Ramakrishna’s guidance, Vivekananda became a monk and devoted himself to the study of Vedanta philosophy.
